(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 05/12/12 -- Implementing sustainable energy infrastructure is a global concern. Smart Meters contribute positively to this initiative by helping customers to map and reduce their energy consumption. Real-time energy monitoring helps energy suppliers to become more accurate in dealing with supply and demand, and, as a result, more efficient in generating clean, green power.

Commitment to change

The UK Government has set a target of installing Smart Meters in every UK home by 2019 as part of its commitment to reduce energy use. are leading the smart revolution, and are already a feature in over 330,000 homes and businesses.

How Smart Meters help

In place of a rickety ticking meter, Smart Meters produce a clear and simple digital display that tells the customer exactly how much electricity and gas they are using, and how much it is costing per hour in pounds and pence.

The real-time reading allows customers to map out exactly what different appliances or hot water/heating systems are using, right down to leaving a phone charger plugged in overnight. This helps them to and make changes that will have a direct impact on the savings they see on their monthly bills.

The reading is also sent directly to the energy supplier via wireless technology. Not only does this mean accurate bills for the consumer, it also means that suppliers can quickly identify patterns of outages or faults that need addressing.

Facilitating forecasts

On a larger scale, the data collected by all of the Smart Meters forms a report on UK energy use. Identifying seasonal and regional patterns helps suppliers to forecast how much energy is needed, and how much needs to be generated to fulfil that requirement.

Changes in infrastructure like smart metering are one of the steps that will help the UK move towards a low-carbon economy.
