Media Advisory: CFNU joins NNU at Chicago Rally

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 05/15/12 -- On the eve of the G8 Summit nurses will be rallying through the streets of Chicago for the launch of the US campaign in support of a Financial Transaction Tax (FTT), commonly known as the Robin Hood Tax.
The Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions (CFNU) will join the National Nurses United (NNU) and more than 100 other community, environmental, health, labour, faith, and anti-poverty organizations at the rally in Chicago on May 17-18, 2012. The rally is a continuation of the unity of last November's G20 summit in France where nurses joined with global NGOs and labour groups to urge the Obama administration to support the tax on Wall Street.
Nurses see the impact of financial uncertainty every day in their patients and they see the toll this is taking on the nation. It is time for world leaders to choose people over corporations.
"Nurses believe that this is a question of priorities and fairness," says Linda Silas. "An FTT would make funds available for job creation, housing, education and health care. We need health care for everyone and a fair taxation system to support it."
Canadian nursing leaders attending the rally include Linda Silas, CFNU President (Ottawa), Pauline Worsfold, CFNU Secretary-Treasurer (Edmonton) and Marilyn Quinn, NBNU President,(Fredricton). They will be available to the media May 17-18 in Chicago. They will also be able to speak about other issues related to the G8 summit, such as the international labour campaign for an AIDS-free generation and what role the G8 must play in addressing the global shortage of health care workers.
