Asda Finance Comments on Pet Population Figures Showing Which Lovable Creatures Take the Top Spot in UK Households and Hearts

As a nation of pet lovers, UK household animals are highly regarded within the family unit. An Asda Finance eSurvey carried out in 2011 revealed that 81% of all pet owners say that their pet is 'Very important' to their family.(i)
Figures show that in 2011 there were around 22 million pets housed in the UK. Based on this statistic, it might come as no surprise that almost one in two households own a pet.(ii)
In 2011, the UK pet population was made up of eight million dogs, eight million cats, as well as millions of fish and other domestic pets such as hamsters, rabbits, guinea pigs and more. Official statistics show that dogs - man's best friend - is in fact the nation's most popular pet with 22% of households owning a dog.(iii)
Pets are commonplace in UK homes as keeping a domestic animal is a well-established trend. Pet popularity is steadily growing with cats and dogs taking the top spots as the nations favourite domestic creatures.
