(PresseBox) - A total of 70 young employees from Bilfinger Berger Industrial Services Group (BIS Group) as well as a further two Bilfinger Berger Group companies are supporting Special Olympics Germany at the 2012 National Games in Munich as volunteers. As the top sponsor, the BIS Group is involved both financially and in the form of the volunteering project.
As part of the project, the volunteers will be assisting with the organisation of the games or supporting the participants in the basket ball, judo and swimming competitions, thus helping to ensure that these games for athletes with intellectual disabilities are a complete success. The volunteers are apprentices, trainees or vocational academy undergraduates from a total of 13 BIS companies in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. A further two Munich-based subsidiaries of the Bilfinger Berger Group are also providing volunteers.
An information day was held in Frankfurt and Munich to prepare the volunteers for the 2012 National Games. Representatives outlined the organisation of Special Olympics Germany, providing information on the national games being held in Munich and offering tips on how best to assist people with intellectual disabilities.
The company's business principles - ACT together - ACT creatively - ACT confidently - ACT smartly - reflect the aspects that really count in the BIS Group's day-to-day activities, defining a system of values in which mutual respect and working together play a key role. Dr. Michael Herbermann, CEO of the BIS Group is convinced of the merits of the project, saying, "To mark our 125th anniversary, we have set ourselves the goal of imbuing our business principles with life in a completely different manner. The national games being organised by Special Olympics Germany offers an ideal opportunity of doing precisely this." In performing their tasks as assistants, the volunteers will be able to experience such crucial skills as the ability to work in a team, social intelligence and responsibility in an entirely different setting. Explains Dr. Michael Herbermann, "The sense of community arising from this sports event for and with people with intellectual disabilities will strengthen the feeling of working as a member of a team. In addition, it will reinforce links among the BIS Group's companies, transcending hierarchies in a way which would normally not be possible.

I greatly welcome the fact that our volunteers are making a contribution to the success of this event while simultaneously they are able to gain valuable experience for their own personal development."
The BIS Group's head office is located in the immediate vicinity of the Olympic Park, which is the venue of many of the sports as well as the site of an extensive accompanying program. The roof spanning the Olympic Stadium is of particular relevance for the company as it was built by the present-day BIS Group's predecessor.
