Tips for Keeping Your Caravan Secure This Summer from Safeguard Caravan Insurance

(firmenpresse) - MANCHESTER, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 05/22/12 -- The time and money invested in a caravan or motorhome and its subsequent upkeep means that it is vital that owners keep them secure. Today Safeguard, one of the UK's leading providers of , is offering some simple advice to protect against caravan thefts and break ins.
Anyone who has a caravan should know his or her VIN number. VIN stands for Vehicle Identification Number and all caravans manufactured since 1992 by the National Caravan Council have one. This is then stored on a system, and can be used to find the location of a motorhome or caravan should it get stolen.
The Association of Chief Police Officers estimates that more than 1,600 caravans are stolen each year while The Caravan Registration and Identification Scheme put that figure at nearly 4,000 a year - this equates to an estimated total of GBP 32,000,000 worth of caravan being stolen.
Safeguard is offering the following tips to keep caravans secure when on holiday:
- Make sure the caravan cannot be towed away. Wheel clamps are the minimum insurance requirement and should be used whenever the caravan is unattended.
- Always lock the doors and windows if you will be away from it for long periods of time.
- Invest in an alarm system. The thief won't be expecting it and it will alert other nearby caravan owners if you are not in the vicinity. Some providers including Safeguard will offer discounts on a premium if owners invest in additional security measures.
- Get to know your 'caravan neighbours' you can look out for each other's belongings and alert one another if anyone suspicious is hanging around.
Andy Leech, Head of Safeguard said, "For nearly all caravan owners, the vehicle is one of their most prized possessions - not only are there expensive costs related to its purchase and maintenance, some people often have strong sentimental values linked to it. It is vital that caravan owners keep their caravan as secure as possible to prevent any thefts or break-ins and of course have adequate in case the worst should happen."
Safeguard offers customers up to GBP 1,000(i) alternative accommodation costs, personal effects cover up to GBP 3,000(i) and up to 30%(i) discount for approved security devices.
