(firmenpresse) - BASS RIVER, NOVA SCOTIA -- (Marketwire) -- 05/27/12 -- On behalf of the Honourable Steven Blaney, Minister of Veterans Affairs, Scott Armstrong, Member of Parliament for Cumberland-Colchester-Musquodoboit Valley, today attended a commemorative ceremony to mark the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers in Bass River, Nova Scotia.

"This is a day to reflect on the contributions and sacrifices made by the brave men and women who have served our country around the world," said Minister Blaney. "Our Government is proud to support events that pay tribute to the thousands of brave Canadians who put their lives on the line in the defence of peace, freedom, democracy and the rule of law."

"I am honoured to be here as Bass River takes up the call to pay tribute to all peacekeepers for their commitment to bringing the peace and freedoms we enjoy in Canada to other communities around the world," said MP Armstrong. "Today is a time to honour all Canadian Veterans, and to acknowledge and support those who continue to serve our country at home and abroad."

Today's event, organized by the Cobequid Veterans Memorial Park Society, received up to $3,050 in funding through Veterans Affairs Canada's Community Engagement Partnership Fund.

First celebrated in 2003, the International Day of United Nations Peacekeepers pays tribute to those who have served in United Nations peacekeeping operations and honours the memory of those who lost their lives while striving for peace. This year's commemoration in Bass River included a parade with a colour party and band, a fly-past by military aircrafts, a wreath-laying ceremony and a reception at West Colchester Consolidated School.

Non-profit organizations, educational institutions and other groups interested in planning remembrance initiatives may be eligible for funding under the Community Engagement Partnership Fund. Funding applications are accepted throughout the year. For more information on the Fund, please visit or call 1-866-522-2122.
