Helsingin Sanomat strengthens its business management - responsibilities of the commercial and the editorial staff separated
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
Press release 6/6/2012 16:00
Helsingin Sanomat will adopt a management model where the management of the
commercial organisation and the editorial staff are separate. Mikael Pentikäinen
continues as Senior Editor-in-Chief. A business director will recruited
alongside him. The director will be responsible for the result-oriented
management of Helsingin Sanomat and Sanoma Kaupunkilehdet (Sanoma Free Sheets),
and the operations of the commercial organisation.
"The uncertain economy and transition in the media sector have affected the
profit-making abilities of Helsingin Sanomat, and we will execute many extensive
development projects. The purpose of the organisation and management model
change is to ensure that the key people have enough time to take care of their
respective core areas. The focus of the operations will also be clarified
further", says Pekka Soini, CEO of Sanoma News.
"Helsingin Sanomat has developed its multichannel activities in an excellent way
and is the pioneer of smart phone and tablet content in Finland. The combo
subscription approach based on multiple channels has also garnered wide
international attention for the paper. The change implemented now strengthens
the management resources of the commercial organisation of Helsingin Sanomat. We
want to ensure that good development continues, while we strengthen our
competitive capacity both in the consumer and media market," Soini continues.
"There are major content reforms being prepared at Helsingin Sanomat, such as
redesigning the paper, the digital development programme and the merger of
Nelonen News with Helsingin Sanomat. It's great that I can concentrate on
leading the newspaper and handling the demanding reforms," Pentikäinen says.
