State-of-the Art Smart Meter Puts the Customer in Control

The latest digital touch-screen display means that rather than wait for your electricity bill to land on your doorstep to see how much energy you have used, you can now track your consumption - not only over months and weeks, but also over days and hours.
British Gas customers are the largest users of smart meters in the UK. They have already been installed in more than 400,000 homes and businesses since the first pilot scheme was launched in August 2011.
The move could also mean estimated readings may become a thing of the past, as household bills become more accurate.
What are smart meters?

They have been developed to replace the traditional meter readings, and digitally deliver an accurate reading straight to via wireless technology - much the same way as a wireless network works on a mobile phone.
The simple system will also use a traffic light colour code to show you, at a glance, how much you're using in real time. If the display is red, you're using a lot. If it's green, your use is low.
Customers can access other useful information via the in-home display to help manage energy use. The meter will register past energy use to help customers keep track of their output, giving them the chance to plan strategies for reducing it over time.
All tariff information, including how much the energy usage is costing, is updated regularly. British Gas can also send text alerts with important information updates, letting customers know, for instance, if they could potentially change to a cheaper tariff.

The provision of accurate, regular information about energy use will also help customers budget better for the future. By providing real-time readings, it makes it easier to identify and resolve any faults or outages in your service.
