BC Lawyer Becomes Advocate for Small Businesses

"Small businesses comprise 98% of the market in BC, but few law firms provide services tailored exclusively for them," says Gordon. "I run a virtual office so my overhead is low which means my fees end up being in the hundreds, not thousands."
It's commercial law with a boutique feel. While many big law firms can seem unapproachable to small businesses, Gordon responds to calls or emails within hours, not days, and takes time to talk with clients about the even simplest of matters.
One of the key aspects of Benchmark Law Corporation is that Gordon offers a flat fee for most services, something rare in the law world. And she does not charge for expenditures like faxing or copying.
Jumping into the unknown isn't without a little fear and trepidation on Gordon's part.
"Going out alone with no guaranteed paycheque, while balancing a mortgage and family, is not something everyone wants to do at this point in their lives," says Gordon, "But I feel really good about my decision to take this on and I've proven I can make a difference to those businesses who need legal work but can't spend thousands going after it."
Dana began practicing in a boutique firm, handling cases for commercial clients from varying industries. She then worked in-house at the British Columbia Medical Association, where she was responsible for negotiating and drafting contracts with the provincial government. She received her law degree from the University of Manitoba.
