(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 06/27/12 -- John Dalzell, chair of Safe Communities Canada's Board of Directors announced today that the Board of Directors has approved the designation of Sherbrooke, Quebec as Canada's 63rd Safe Community.

"This designation recognizes that Sherbrooke has acquired the capacity to take strategic actions that will reduce the pain and cost of its injuries," states Dalzell. "It also means that Sherbrooke becomes a full participating member of Canada's vibrant network of Safe Communities, reaching over 25% of Canada's population."

Sherbrooke's first two community-based safety promotion campaigns are a very successful helmet safety initiative for cyclists in the community, and a new campaign focusing on pedestrian safety. Safe Communities Sherbrooke plans to expand the range of its Injury Prevention and Safety Promotion programmes to account for all age groups and for its vulnerable populations.

Bernard Sevigny, mayor of Sherbrooke and president of Sherbrooke Ville en Sante, Louise Gosselin, director of the organization and Dr. Claude Cyr, pediatrician at CHUS, the initiator and spokesman of the Sherbrooke Safe Community Committee confirm their commitment to the Safe Communities movement in Canada, stating: "We will be proud and enthusiastic to join your network as a Safe Community and we are anxious to work within your organization".

Sherbrooke becomes the first Safe Community in Quebec and the only francophone Safe Community in the world.
