(firmenpresse) - ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 07/06/12 -- The American Diabetes Association (Association), the nation's leading voluntary health organization in the fight to Stop Diabetes® and its deadly consequences, will be participating in the 2012 National Council of La Raza (NCLR) Annual Conference in Las Vegas, July 7 - 11. NCLR is the largest national Hispanic civil rights and advocacy organization in the United States working to improve opportunities for Hispanic Americans.

Victor H. Gonzalez, MD, member of the Association's National Board of Directors and Chair of the Texas Diabetes Council, will be an expert panelist at the town hall meeting: ¡Salud! Eliminating Disparities That Block Good Health Among Latinos. Gonzalez is a vitreoretinal surgeon and founder of the Valley Retina Institute, P.A. in Texas. He is a leading expert in diabetes and retinopathy care and a national advocate for diabetes education and health care. Co-sponsors also presenting at the town hall include the American Cancer Society and the American Heart Association; collaboration made possible through the American Diabetes Association. Experts will cover topics ranging from root causes of health disparities among Latinos to current communication and awareness strategies that will prove most effective in reaching the Latino community. The town hall will be held on Sunday, July 8, from 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. at the Mandalay Bay Convention Center.

The Association will continue its tradition of bringing its Latino Initiative's program to the NCLR conference. Por tu Familia is the Association's community outreach program targeting the Latino community. The program is designed to raise awareness in the Latino community about the seriousness of diabetes, its risk factors and warning signs through culturally relevant and easy-to-understand health education. Efforts focus on healthy eating, understanding the link between cardiovascular diseases and diabetes, and the importance and impact of increasing physical activity. In addition, the program encourages appropriate testing among those at risk and treatment for those diagnosed with diabetes. At the Association's booth, attendees will receive free blood glucose screenings performed by the bilingual health personnel of Lab Express. Those found at risk will receive appropriate medical referrals. Other activities include hula-hoop competitions for the entire family and the opportunity to Create your Plate by learning and experimenting with portion sizes. Bilingual health education materials and many more exciting activities will also be available to all conference participants, July 7 and 8 from 10:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. and July 10 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.at the Mandalay Bay.
