(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 07/12/12 -- The number of Neets, 16-18 year olds that are not in education, employment or training, has risen in the past 12 months, according to latest figures from the government. This is a worrying figure that needs to be tackled through better access to vocational courses says provider Perspective.

The annual unemployment figures released by the government show that 8.1 per cent of 16 to 18 year olds were not in education, employment or training (Neet) last year, an increase from 7.5 per cent in 2010. There were 154,710 last year, a figure that the government wants to abolish by having all young people up to the age of 18 participating in education or training by 2015.

Paul Davis, managing director of system provider Perspective, commented: "The rising number of young people unemployed and not in education in the UK is extremely concerning. Inspiring the young people of today to stay in education, get a job or enter into training is the most important step to tackle this increasing figure. The government has introduced a number of incentives to help address youth unemployment, GBP 7.5 billion will be spent on education and training including apprenticeships."

In April the government announced the introduction of the Youth Contract, a government subsidy of GBP 2,275 for employers who take on and train young people. As such, offering apprenticeships is looking more attractive for businesses in 2012 than ever before.

Paul continues: "The youth contract is a step in the right direction to encourage employers to take on apprenticeships. Working with Neets to help them mould careers for the future through apprenticeships and vocational training is a way we can all ensure we have skilled workers for the future."

Perspective is a leading provider of , with its student management system, Sunesis, being implemented by numerous local authorities and businesses around the UK and subsequently being responsible for monitoring millions of learners. For more information, please visit or call 0121 506 9540.
