The common misconception could be based on the principle that dogs typically like to chase things and if a cat is in sight, this could be the new object of their desire.
Despite this however, there are many households in the UK where there is both a dog and a cat. Figures show that 55% of pet owners have a dog, while 52% of households own a cat.(i)
It is possible for cats and dogs to live together and enjoy one another's company.
The trick is introducing the pets to each other in the right way. There are a number of things that owners can do to introduce cats and dogs to each other without having hairballs flying!
You should under no circumstances leave a dog and a cat alone when you first introduce them to one another. Both animals will naturally feel safe in their home environment, which they consider their territory. A new addition to the family such as another pet can be seen as a threat.
This can cause considerable distress for your cat. A good option when first looking to introduce a cat to a dog is to keep your cat in a separate room for a few days prior to introduction. This will give your cat time to acclimatise to the smells and sounds of a dog, and vice versa. Once both pets seem settled in their environment should you introduce them.
If done correctly, there is little reason why cats and dogs can't live closely with one another in a loving pet owning household. If you do have cats and dogs it may be beneficial to take out .
