Governor General to Visit Canadian Forces Members Participating in the Rim of the Pacific Exercise
(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/18/12 -- His Excellency the Right Honourable David Johnston, Governor General and Commander-in-Chief of Canada, will join General Walt Natynczkyk, Chief of the Defence Staff, in visiting Canadian Forces members operating in Hawaii and the Pacific Ocean during the Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2012 joint and combined multinational force exercise from July 19 to 22, 2012.
"The RIMPAC exercise in the Pacific is an excellent training opportunity for more than 1,400 of Canada's sailors, soldiers, airmen and airwomen working together in the world's largest multinational exercise," said the Governor General. "I am very proud to witness this exercise first-hand, especially this year, as three Canadian Forces military officers are occupying senior leading roles during RIMPAC. This exercise is designed to prepare our military-as well as other forces from Pacific Rim nations-participating in missions that range from humanitarian aid to full-combat operation."
RIMPAC began as an annual exercise in 1971, and since 1974 has been scheduled every second year. Canada has participated in every exercise since its inception. This year's exercise, being held over a six-week period from June 29 to August 3, involves more than 42 ships, six submarines, more than 200 aircraft, as well as 25 000 personnel from 22 participating nations.
