Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) to explain impact of Candu Energy strike to Ontario Power Generation (OPG)

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 07/24/12 -- Members of the Society of Professional Engineers and Associates (SPEA) are setting up an information picket at the corporate offices of Ontario Power Generation (OPG) at 700 University Avenue on Tuesday, July 24, 2012 to explain why they are on and how it may impact OPG's current and future projects.

"Our members are proud of the work that we have done for OPG at CANDU sites across Ontario," said Peter White, President of SPEA. "Our members are fully committed to delivering on the refurbishments and the new EC6 design. We believe that CANDU has a strong future."

"We are concerned that SNC-Lavalin is employing negotiating tactics more akin to Montgomery Burns," said White. "We are asking for a reasonable deal that will keep some of the most talented people in the nuclear industry in Canada. We have made significant concessions on key issues but have not seen any reciprocity on their part."

The strike entering its third week involves over 800 members across Canada who are employed by Candu Energy, owned by SNC-Lavalin. "We strongly urge OPG and other Candu Energy clients to encourage them to settle this strike by tabling a fair and reasonable offer," said White. "It's time to settle this and get back to work designing the best and safest nuclear power plant available."

The Society of Professional Engineers and Associates () represents engineers, scientist, technologist and trades people who collectively represent the majority of Canada's nuclear power design expertise employed by Candu Energy Inc., a wholly owned subsidiary of SNC-Lavalin.
