Summer's the time of year when many people are preparing to go away on their holidays. However it's important to make sure your home's protected before you leave, so you don't return to any disasters. Take a look at HomeServe's summer security tips to help you keep your home secure while you're away on holiday.
It's a good idea to leave a set of keys with someone you trust so they can keep an eye on your home while you're away. If you have a friend checking your home, leave a list of emergency contact numbers for them and also details of how to contact you in an emergency.
Move valuable items (such as computers) out of view and hide your car keys. If you have a friend checking in, ask them to collect the post and move it away from the front door; a build up of letters is a sure sign to an opportunist burglar that you're away. If you don't have anyone to help you out, speak to your postman as mail can be held for up to 2 months and delivered at a later date.
Avoid advertising your holiday dates on social network sites - you never know who's watching! If you have a neighbour coming round daily to feed a pet, ask them to open the curtains in the morning and draw them at night so your home looks lived in.
Unplug all electrical appliances, including computers, TVs, kettles, toasters and stereos. Leave only the fridge and freezer plugged in, to protect against any power surges. Also turn off your stopcock to prevent and leaks.
Before you set off, empty your fridge of any food which is likely to go off while you're away and make sure all rubbish is placed in an outside bin. Buy some long-life milk and leave unopened in your fridge, ready for that much needed cup of tea on your return.
