Quinoa

Quinoa is considered a seed that can be prepared like a whole grain such as rice or barley. It provides all of your essential amino acids, which is fantastic for protein intake. It's also gluten and cholesterol free. Try it with pesto and spinach or with garlic and Parmesan cheese.

Greek Yogurt

Greek yogurt is a MUST if you're going veggie. It has four times as much protein in it than natural yoghurt and less sugar, so will make the perfect pudding or post-gym snack.

Have at least five a day

To stay a fit and healthy vegetarian, eat plenty of fruit and veg. You won't be getting your nutrients from meat and so you'll need to compensate by eating lots of fruit and veg - try having a multi-fruit smoothie for an easy way to consume these nutrients. Eat red pepper and spinach especially as they're full of iron - which you'll definitely need, whether you're undertaking or new to the whole 'gym thing'.

Food Pyramid

The vegetarian food pyramid puts grains in the largest food consumption category and fats in the smallest. Veggies should substitute meat and dairy in the protein section for beans and legumes. If you're consuming milk and eggs these can also count as protein sources.

Although vegetarian diets may lead to lower cholesterol levels, heart rate and type 2 diabetes, if you're not eating a well-balanced diet you can quickly become deficient in certain nutrients, so bear in mind these tips.
