(firmenpresse) - VANCOUVER, BRITISH COLUMBIA -- (Marketwire) -- 08/09/12 -- Media representatives are invited to attend the 5th Annual Cypress Challenge: A Fundraiser for Pancreatic Cancer Research in memory of Bob Hager. 100 percent of the proceeds from the ride up Cypress Mountain, hosted by the Glotman-Simpson Cycling Club, go to the BC Cancer Foundations' Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund.

Each year the Cypress Challenge is dedicated to a Vancouverite who made a difference in our community and who was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. The 2012 Cypress Challenge will be dedicated to the memory of Bob Hager. Bob Hager was a prominent Vancouverite who was a driving force in building one of Canada's most successful asset managers, Philips, Hager & North (PH&N). He was also a generous community contributor, enriching and improving the lives of the many people less fortunate than himself. Bob died of pancreatic cancer in October 2011.

The event is open to everyone with a bike, a helmet, and the determination to pedal up Cypress Mountain. Over 500 cyclists are expected to ride either 5km to the First Peak Look Out or 12km up to the Full Peak. 100 percent of the proceeds support the BC Cancer Foundation's Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund and life-saving research at the BC Cancer Agency.

Pancreatic Cancer & the Cypress Challenge

Pancreatic cancer has the lowest survival rate of all cancers. The Canadian average for five-year survival is only 5 per cent, with nearly 600 people in B.C. expected to be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer this year. With so few survivors to advocate and raise funds, events like the Cypress Challenge are very important to help raise awareness and support more research.

The Cypress Challenge is one of the few events building awareness and funds for pancreatic cancer research. In 2011, the Cypress Challenge raised over $125,000 for the Pancreatic Cancer Research Fund at the BC Cancer Foundation in memory of Jack Poole.

The BC Cancer Foundation is the bridge that connects philanthropic support and research breakthroughs in cancer knowledge. As the fundraising partner of the BC Cancer Agency and the largest charitable funder of cancer research in this province, we enable donors to make contributions to leading-edge research that has a direct impact on improvements to cancer care for patients in British Columbia. We fund with the goal of finding solutions. Visit to make a donation or to learn how you can make a difference in the lives of those affected by cancer.

The BC Cancer Agency, an agency of the Provincial Health Services Authority, is committed to reducing the incidence of cancer, reducing the mortality from cancer, and improving the quality of life of those living with cancer. It provides a comprehensive cancer control program for the people of British Columbia by working with community partners to deliver a range of oncology services, including prevention, early detection, diagnosis and treatment, research, education, supportive care, rehabilitation and palliative care.
