The Recent Accreditation Challenges of Bridgepoint's Ashford University Have Led to Major Concerns That the School May Lose Government Funding; International Accreditation Organization Explains What Measures an Institution Can Take to Maintain Such Standards

(firmenpresse) - HOUSTON, TX -- (Marketwire) -- 08/14/12 -- In higher education, accreditation is important; schools which are not accredited are not able to attract a decent number of students, nor do they get necessary financial assistance to keep them operational. A recent in Forbes reveals the current accreditation issues facing Ashford University, an institution that is part of the for-profit Bridgepoint Education network. The article explains that the Higher Learning Commission of the North Central Association of Schools and Colleges (HLC) is requesting detailed information from Ashford to address the school's major shortcomings. International Accreditation Organization, which specializes in providing standardized guidelines for schools throughout the world, explains that proactive efforts can prevent such damaging investigations.

Although the investigation of the Bridgepoint system takes place during an industry-wide slump, the HLC is not losing focus on its examination of Ashford's overall procedures. According to the article, Ashford was denied accreditation by the HLC as a result of the institution's excessive spending on recruitment efforts, rather than using the funds to establish solid teaching models. The explains that losing accreditation can be a major blow to any institution, as demonstrated by Bridgepoint's recent drop in shares by a steep 56 percent. The article also notes, "Without accreditation, the companies stand to lose government funding, which can account for as much as 90 percent of the total revenue."

In a recent press statement, International Accreditation Organization responded to Ashford's current situation, "The very fact that the organization is now under 'special monitoring' by HLC indicates a problem with regard to maintaining good education standards." The group explains that accreditation is more than keeping a school financially viable; it is about creating a positive learning space. The organization also suggests that if Bridgepoint had taken more strong measures of developing a solid educational model, instead of merely focusing on profits, Ashford University may have avoided investigation and a loss of accreditation in the first place.

Ashford has responded to the unexpected request for accreditation examination by making plans to host an advisory visit from the HLC this October. Despite serious efforts to correct the situation, the article notes, the incident could give more strength to Bridgepoint's major competitors that include Apollo Group, DeVry Education, ITT Educational Services and The Washington Post Co.'s Kaplan business.

In order for these educators to understand what makes a successful education model, International Accreditation Organization explains how it observes and examines a school's qualifications. "The International Accreditation Organization recommends educational institutions based on 'internationally accepted' standards of organizational management, academic excellence and institutional performance, ensure high performance standards and complete statutory compliance."
