Supreme Court of Canada to Hear Rasouli Case
(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 08/14/12 -- Time is running out for the family of a Toronto engineer who are desperately trying to raise funds for a legal battle to keep him alive. There are only four days left on their internet fundraising campaign.
Hassan Rasouli relies on life support to continue his existence. His doctors gave up hope. They want to take him off life support and let him die.
The doctors approached Parichehr Salasel, Hassan's wife and his next of kin, to obtain her consent to take him off life support. She said no. This is against her faith. It would be a betrayal; especially since Hassan appears to have some consciousness. Hassan has given a thumbs up, played with balls, and tracked movies and pictures. He tries to communicate with his eyes. His passion for life shines through his eyes and face.
The doctors threatened to take Hassan off life support, despite Parichehr's refusal to consent. Therefore, she obtained a court injunction to stop them. The case has already been heard by the Ontario Superior Court and the Ontario Court of Appeal, with results in favour of the Rasouli family at both levels. However, the doctors' have taken the case all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada (SCC). Hassan Rasouli's case is going to be heard by the SCC on December 10th.
At this point, Hassan Rasouli and his family are counting on your help and support in this long and expensive legal battle. The battle is now not limited to Hassan Rasouli and his family, but it is a battle of all Canadians for their individual autonomy against doctors' authority. Winning this battle would preserve Hassan Rasouli's autonomy over his own body and life and would curb the doctors' power to decide unilaterally about the lives of vulnerable people.
