SolarWorld has been given the highest rating as manufacturer of crystalline
solar technology in a comparison of sustainability by the Silicon Valley
Toxics Coalition (SVTC) in the USA. The US environmental organization which
is independent of the government and of private companies did not only
award points for the transparency and social responsibility of the
companies but also for the sustainability of production and delivery
relationships as well as the non-use of environmentally damaging materials.
Having received several awards for its sustainable corporate management in
Germany the SolarWorld group has thus also received top marks in the USA.
Frank Asbeck: No exclusion for environmental poisons in photovoltaic
technology
'Sustainability is our business model and our commitment to our customers',
says Dipl.-Ing. Frank H. Asbeck, Chairman and CEO of SolarWorld AG. 'It is
important to me that the photovoltaic industry allows itself to be measured
against criteria of sustainability. Clean technologies must also be
produced in a clean way.'
SolarWorld AG therefore comes out against efforts to exempt the solar
industry in Europe from the requirements of European environmental
legislation. 'We are against an exceptional ruling in the case of the RoHS
Directive of the European Union that wants to ban the use of hazardous
substances like heavy metals in electric appliances. Creating an exclusion
in an environmental directive for an environmental technology of all things
would be downright absurd', argues Frank H. Asbeck. As some manufacturers
may find it difficult to implement the requirements of such a consistent
directive straight away SolarWorld AG proposes certain transition periods.
A complete exclusion would, however, not be acceptable as this would quite
rightly damage the image of sustainability of the industry in the eyes of
the consumers.
