Yorkshire service provider enlists Zhone VDSL solution to leverage existing
copper infrastructure for high-speed broadband

Oakland, CA - September 5, 2012 - Zhone Technologies, Inc. (NASDAQ: ZHNE), a
global leader in FTTx network access solutions, today announced that through its
partnership with Network Extender Technologies Ltd., has secured York Data
Services-a leading internet service provider in Yorkshire, England-for a new
network deployment. York Data Services will be using Zhone's MX-160 solution to
deliver high-speed broadband services to business customers.

York Data Services, a telecom and internet service provider to the Yorkshire
region since 2003, is rolling out a new Fiber-to-the-Curb /Very-high-speed
digital subscriber line 2 (FTTC/ VDSL2) network enabling high-speed data and
voice services to business customers. The network, managed through the MX-160,
is significant in that few service providers in the U.K. are deploying their own
FTTC / VDSL2 infrastructure, which can extend the life of copper networks and
enable cost-effective high-bandwidth connectivity.

VDSL2 is capable of doubling the downstream data rates delivered by VDSL and
quadruples those delivered by ADSL2+ networks depending upon loop length and
some other constraints. VDSL2 is particularly effective in the Fiber-to-the-Node
(FTTN), Fiber-to-the-Building (FTTB) and FTTC topology as the service provider

reuses existing copper deployed and enables high-speed connectivity to
businesses utilizing VDSL2 in the last mile, with fiber being extended to the
node, building or curb.

"Zhone was chosen for its industry-leading access technology and high level of
knowledge in the FTTx space," said Mark Fordyce, managing director for York Data
Services. "Our objective for this project is to cost effectively deliver high-
speed, reliable broadband services to some of our business parks in Yorkshire
using the existing copper infrastructure. Zhone was the perfect partner in
helping us achieve this goal, because of the flexibility, scalability and ease-
of-use of its solutions."

"This new partnership is proof that service providers globally continue to
recognize Zhone as a leading provider of Fiber-to-the-Curb deployments," said
Brian Caskey, chief marketing officer for Zhone. "This new fiber network allows
York Data Services to expand its offering and provide advanced broadband
services to business customers in Yorkshire. Zhone is dedicated to helping the
service provider utilize its current copper infrastructure. Our scalable
platforms offer high quality of experience for subscribers, along with ease of
management to address the rising costs of network operation-all of which Zhone's
customers value."
