A New Mobile App Offers Streamlined Processes and Improved Efficiencies in Disaster Relief Efforts -- Winning the Praise of Philanthropists Like Darren Salkeld

(firmenpresse) - WINNIPEG, MB -- (Marketwire) -- 09/10/12 -- Whenever a natural disaster strikes, members of surrounding communities tend to band together to offer their support, whether it is financial, emotional, or otherwise. Sometimes, however, the process of ascertaining who needs assistance most urgently -- and how that assistance can be delivered as quickly as possible -- can prove daunting. A new mobile app has been , however, to help streamline the disaster relief process -- and it has won the praise of philanthropists like .

The new app was developed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers as a way of delivering high-tech solutions for looming crises. Initially, the app was developed with Hurricane Isaac and its potentially damaging effects in mind. Federal officials launched the app in hopes of minimizing some of the inefficiencies experienced during Hurricane Katrina relief efforts. The app allows homeowners to easily and intuitively file requests for assistance.

Darren Salkeld is a long-time philanthropist and a strong supporter of local and international relief efforts. He has issued a new statement to the press, explaining how the new disaster relief app works -- and also singing its praises.

"Allowing homeowners to request assistance during times of need, especially when disasters such as Hurricane Isaac happen, is critical to minimizing personal injury and property damage," Salkeld says. "The new mobile app known as 'Operation Blue Roof' is a huge step in the right direction. The mobile app can ensure delivery of critical data during times of need."

Darren Salkeld describes the app as a truly interactive measure. "Operation Blue Roof requires three sets of people to participate in order for it to function properly," he says. "These three groups include the homeowners who request assistance, the Engineers who manage the Blue Roof operation, and the contractors who perform temporary roof, floor, and window repairs, as requested by the homeowners."

For the homeowners in crisis, ease of use is paramount -- and according to Darren Salkeld, this new app succeeds on that level. "A homeowner simply interacts with their smartphone, providing photos and notes of damage, and estimates the quantities of materials needed for proper repair," he says. "The app will tell the Army Corps engineers the GPS coordinates of the home in need of assistance, and will also enable leaders to communicate with the response personnel who are currently deployed."

Darren Salkeld concludes by saying that, while the new app is far from perfect, "it is a giant step in the right direction, and I predict that within the coming year we will see several very sophisticated smart phone apps appear that will be designed to protect the people, children, and property affected by natural disasters."
