Canada Provides Additional Humanitarian Assistance in Response to Floods in the Philippines

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/10/12 -- Today, the Honourable Julian Fantino, Minister of International Cooperation, announced that Canada is providing additional assistance to help those affected by floods in the Philippines.

"We extend our deepest sympathies to the individuals and families impacted by the devastation," said Minister Fantino. "We continue to work with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies and the Philippine Red Cross to ensure that measures are taken to alleviate suffering and ensure humanitarian assistance is provided to those who need it most."

In response to the recent flooding that devastated the northeastern coast of the Philippines, Canada is providing an additional $50,000 to help the more than 100,000 people affected by tropical storm Kai-Tak. This funding is in addition to $50,000 () to help the more than 4.4 million people affected by flooding in Manila and in neighbouring provinces, bringing Canada's total contribution to $100,000. To date, Canada has provided more than $1.1 million in humanitarian assistance in response to the impact of natural disasters in the Philippines in 2012.

This support will help the (), through the (), to meet the immediate needs of those affected by the disaster by providing drinking water, food, and other much-needed relief items.

CIDA's () aims to save lives, alleviate suffering, and maintain the dignity of those affected by conflicts and natural disasters by responding in appropriate, timely, and effective ways.

The Government of Canada will continue to monitor the situation closely to ensure that basic human needs of affected people are met and to provide further assistance if required.
