How to Make Your Car More Fuel-Efficient

(firmenpresse) - LEEDS, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 09/15/12 -- A growing number of drivers are searching for cheaper and more fuel-efficient vehicles, as motoring costs continue to rise. Asda Money research reveals that fuel-efficient cars are high in demand, but if you can't afford to upgrade your car just yet, there are ways you can make your existing vehicle more fuel efficient.

Figures show that a staggering 74% of motorists would consider buying a vehicle which is more environmentally friendly and fuel-efficient.(i) Yet, a number of those polled don't have the funds for a 'green' car and some believe that they are too expensive. Asda Money has covered these issues in a guide to that can be read on their website.

"There is no way I could afford the high prices of these kind of vehicles. If I could afford to buy an environmentally friendly car I would genuinely buy one of these cars as a preference, but I just can't afford it," one Asda customer explained.

Asda Money reveals how you can make your current car more fuel-efficient by altering your driving habits.

Efficient driving

You might not have control over the price at the pumps, but you can control the way you drive and how efficient your driving abilities can be. By changing your driving habits, you could make your fuel go further. For example, accelerating and braking gradually will use less fuel. The more pressure you put on the pedal, the more work the vehicle has to do to quickly accelerate or brake. Coming to a natural halt could help towards reducing your fuel consumption.

Heating and cooling systems

In the summer months it can be tempting to turn your vehicle's air conditioning on and the heating on during colder weather; however, this uses a significant amount of the car's power. Similarly opening the windows and driving at high speeds can also make a vehicle less fuel-efficient as it increases the aerodynamic drag, ultimately wasting more fuel.(ii)

Gears and speed

Using the correct gears at the right speeds can dramatically help towards achieving better fuel economy. Travelling at high speeds uses more fuel so it would be advisable to stick to the speed limit. It's been reported that travelling at 80mph uses between 10% and 20% more fuel than driving at 70mph.(ii)

If you are looking to save money on your motoring costs is available from Asda Money.
