More Public Service Cuts at Health Canada: Who Will Ensure the Safety of Natural Health Products?

ID: 185496

(firmenpresse) - OTTAWA, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 09/20/12 -- Fifty-six (56) Health Canada (HC) professionals represented by the Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada (PIPSC) received the news today that their positions will be "affected" by the government's continuing cuts to programs and services. This brings to over 5250 the number of PIPSC members who have received a Workforce Adjustment (WFA) notice since the tabling of the 2012 federal Budget.

This is the second round of cuts this year at Health Canada. Earlier this April, over 300 PIPSC public service professionals, mostly scientists, received "affected" notices from the Department. The additional employees affected today are employed by HC's Health Products and Food Branch, within the Natural Health Products Directorate, in the Bureau of Product Review and Assessment. They are scientists tasked with reviewing and regulating natural health products destined for the Canadian marketplace.

"Is it really wise to cut back on these positions just to save a few dollars?" asked PIPSC President Gary Corbett. "Natural health products are gaining in popularity and consumers need to know that they are safe. Historically, little attention was paid to these types of products by regulators but that has recently begun to change. It's difficult to understand the government's strategy. On the one hand it wants stricter monitoring of this product category, but on the other it's ready to let go the people whose job it is to protect the health of Canadians".

The Professional Institute of the Public Service of Canada represents some 60,000 professionals and scientists across Canada's public sector.
