Fire Chiefs of the Year Announced

JOHN'S, NEWFOUNDLAND AND LABRADOR -- (Marketwire) -- 09/27/12 -- The Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs (CAFC) has announced this year's recipients of the Fire Chief of the Year awards. Fire Chief Bruce Burrell of the Calgary Fire Department has been named Canada's Full-time Fire Chief of the Year, while Fire Chief Harry Farrell of the New Maryland Fire Department is the Volunteer Fire Chief of the Year.
Both awards were announced yesterday evening during the closing ceremonies at the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs' annual conference held in St. John's, Newfoundland.
Langley Fire Chief Stephen Gamble, CFO, who was elected as the new President of the Canadian Association of Fire Chiefs, congratulated Chief Burrell and Chief Farrell, noting that both of them were being honoured for their dedication to training and strengthening of community outreach initiatives.
"Chief Burrell and Chief Farrell have both made great strides in cultivating wide-spread support for the Fire Services in the communities they serve. Firefighting is an intrinsically dangerous business, requiring steadfast leadership and determination," said Chief Gamble. "This year's recipients exemplify excellence in the provision of public safety services - a key part of which is educating the public about the dangers posed by fire."
"Both of our Fire Chiefs of the Year are mandated to protect the lives and property of their citizens. They have demonstrated their commitment to training, public education, the effective use of equipment and a constant drive to find innovative ways of protecting their communities," the CAFC President added. "More than anything else, they have equally shown themselves to be true leaders."
There are 3,500 fire departments in Canada and 108,000 firefighting personnel. Volunteers comprise 91 per cent of all departments and 77 per cent of total personnel.
