Pilar Montoya Honored by STEMconnector(TM) at 100 Women Leaders in STEM Celebration
(firmenpresse) - INDUSTRY, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/02/12 -- The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) Chief Executive Officer Pilar Montoya, will be honored in the 100 Women Leaders in STEM event in Washington D.C. today in celebration of women role models in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). In addition to being recognized by STEMconnector™, Montoya will also speak today, alongside Lori Garver, Deputy Administrator for NASA, Lisa P. Jackson, EPA Administrator, Lt. Governor Kim Reynolds of Iowa and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, at the Senate Celebration taking place in the Hart Senate Office Building. The event begins at 4:00 p.m. EDT.
100 Women Leaders in STEM, a publication by STEMconnector™, showcases the careers and initiatives of more than one hundred women leaders who are active role models for the underrepresented segment of women in America's growing shortage of STEM professionals.
Montoya will be honored alongside 55 other women leaders in the corporate, government and nonprofit sectors, including presidents and key public officials.
Montoya has been recognized as a driving force to advance the cause of attracting more girls and women to STEM careers and mentoring young Latina STEM professionals, in addition to developing programs to expose all age groups to STEM. She has helped develop and expand an array of programs including STEM educational activities for K-12th grade students, science programs to involve the entire family, and presentations for girls to stimulate awareness and interest in the STEM field. Montoya also developed an expanded program at the SHPE National Conference specifically focusing on and inspiring Latinas to enter STEM careers and gain exposure to Latina role models currently working in STEM careers.
"Diversity in the workplace and access to quality STEM education are a national imperative that when met will ensure that the brightest minds from the U.S. are the ones leading innovation and technological solutions to global, environmental, health and critical issues," said Montoya.
Along with her team, Montoya is organizing a national conference to bring together 6,000 Hispanic STEM professionals, college students, and high school students to raise awareness, access, support, and provide development relating to STEM issues. This year's SHPE National Conference (), takes place November 14-18, in Fort Worth, Texas at the Forth Worth Convention Center.

Montoya has been the CEO of the SHPE since 2009. She has over 25 years of business and financial management experience for private companies and non-profits. Acknowledged as both a community and business leader, Montoya has been recognized for her achievements by Hispanic Business Magazine, the California Assembly, the national American Cancer Society, the Child Abuse Prevention Council and numerous business organizations.
The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) was founded in Los Angeles, California in 1974 by a group of engineers employed by the city of Los Angeles.
