“Every weakness is a hidden talent!” was the motto for the voice classes for Belcanto. Dr. Karin Wettig gave in Munich, where singers used to present all kinds of voice problems and ask the same questions over and over again. As she made her way to an authentic voice after having suffered from a broken speaking voice after her divorce by researching the whole territory of Belcanto and Opera Singing, because no therapy, no vocal coach or singing teacher and not even Opera classes could really help her. After some years of seeking the truth about her personal voice, she met Ann Reynolds in a masterclass and became astounded how she was able to change a voice within 10 minutes. Her interest for Italian Belcanto Technique grew and she wrote her first book - Singer's ABC Belcanto - with all her insights. Not quite satisfied with her personal vocal results and desillusioned by most teachers who often could not explain what really worked for an Opera voice, she gave up on all teachings to learn from the best - her Idole, Maria Callas. Videos and films gave her insights she explored in depth by reading the theoretic treatises all over the development of Belcanto since the Castratos of Renaissance times and their famous teachers. Then she explored the role anatomy and physical conditions play for the voice and went into the study of Alexandertechnique, Rolfing, Feldenkrais and Cantieni training, not to mention her studies of Breathing Techniques and Yoga.

When she found the key to her personal authentic Coloratura Soprano and the reasons why a voice sounds really operalike and why another voice only sounds like being under pressure, she decided to write “Singing like Callas and Caruso”, because participants of her singing classes came up with the same questions over and over again. Her adventurous way to her personal authentic voice had guided her through nights in dark churches where she exercises until she found her effortless tone. As a result from her adventurous journey her latest book - Singing like Callas and Caruso is not only a practical voice and body fitness training, but also describes in amusing style the story of Belcanto and the most famous Belcanto teachers since 1600. A must read for every singing student and a revealing lecture for choir singers or hobby singers who like to know more.

“Singing like Callas & Caruso” lets the reader in on the secrets of opera singing. The author, Dr. Karin Wettig, a musicologist, is the living proof for the results of her research on Italian Belcanto for over 2 decades. After a divorce the sudden loss of her speaking voice brought dramatic changes into her life referring to career, livingplace, friends and family. In Southern Germany, her adventure journey on the way back to her authentic voice began. As voice therapy didn’t bring any effect, she decided to sing. Voice trainers, Belcanto teachers, Opera schools & master classes were mostly as disillusioning, as the rivalries in famous church choirs where she sang. But she had fallen in love with Opera and Mozart arias and she wanted more. Watching Maria Callas in videos and films; listening to the Divas of Caruso’s time, she followed a passionate call of her heart, deeply diving into the physical and emotional aspects of Opera singing while her musicological nerve inspired her to study the history of singing from the Renaissance and the castrato singers until today.

On the way to her authentic voice, nights in dark churches followed with secret training of Belcanto repertoire from Farinelli to Handel, Mozart, Bellini, Rossini and Verdi. Body training like Alexandertechnique, Rolfing, Cantieni’s and Yoga filled the free time. Awareness and self observation for body and voice gave her the key to miraculous changes by yoga, slow movement and breathing exercises: her jaws and tongue became smoother, her receding chin moved forward, her palate and her front teeth adjusted in alignment and she grew over 1,5 cm at over 40. “Every weakness is a hidden talent!” was the motto for her voice classes, where singers used to present all kinds of voice problems and ask the same questions over and over again. So she decided to write “Singing like Callas and Caruso”. The book gives not only a practical voice and body fitness training, but also describes in amusing style the benefits of singer’s daily voice and body fitness training.
