(firmenpresse) - CALGARY, ALBERTA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/03/12 -- The Commanding Officer and members of the crew of Her Majesty's Canadian Ship (HMCS) Calgary arrive in Calgary today to conduct a five-day visit to their namesake city.

"I am extremely honoured to represent the city of Calgary," said Commander Paul Francoeur. "It is no secret that Calgarians are enthusiastic supporters of their namesake warship and having that support really makes an impact for my crew."

The men and women of HMCS Calgary will take this opportunity to give back to its namesake city. During their time in Calgary, the crew will conduct a number of activities such as visiting the Children's Hospital, the Centre for Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary, conducting presentations at local schools as well as assisting at Habitat for Humanity and the Mustard Seed.

Based in Esquimalt, British Columbia, HMCS Calgary was commissioned in May 1995 and is the sixth ship delivered to the Royal Canadian Navy (RCN) under the Canadian Patrol Frigate program. She is a Canadian-designed and built ship, highly capable to perform in a variety of roles.

HMCS Calgary is currently progressing through a planned mid-life modernization program designed to ensure that she maintains her operational capability and effectiveness to the end of her projected service life. As such, she and her sister ships will remain the robust backbone of the Navy as it ensures the safety of our home waters and contributes to international peace and stability abroad.
