According to figures from Asda Money, a staggering 93% of Asda customers have taken out full comprehensive car insurance(i). A third of UK drivers have also opted for the all inclusive insurance(ii). What is comprehensive car insurance?
Comprehensive car insurance, which is also known as fully comprehensive, is the highest available level of car insurance. It provides the same level of cover as third party insurance, but with additional extras. For example, accident damage is also covered with comprehensive car insurance, but not always on third party.
Typically with this type of insurance you are protected against injury, damage and accidents, even if the accident was not your fault. Whilst you might have to pay an excess fee on a claim, there are a number of other benefits to comprehensive car insurance.
What are you covered for?
Comprehensive car insurance typically covers motorists for loss or damaged caused by fire, theft or attempted theft. Loss or damage to audio equipment, liability if someone else is hurt or killed as a result of an incident involving the insured vehicle are also commonly covered with this type of insurance, however it would be advisable to check your policy for details. Personal injury to you, a spouse or your insured drivers is not often covered with third party insurance but can be with comprehensive cover.
There are a number of benefits to fully compressive compared to third party insurance. Third party, fire and theft car insurance is the second most popular option for Asda customers with some 4%(iii) taking out this level of cover. This type of insurance could also cover you for loss or damage caused by fire but might not cover you for accidental damage.
There might also be a cap to the amount you can claim on, however policies could vary and it could be worth reviewing exactly what you are covered for and the benefits you could have.
