Ashley Furniture HomeStore Discusses 7 Design No-Nos & Ways to Make Them Less Ghoulish

(firmenpresse) - ARCADIA, WI -- (Marketwire) -- 10/08/12 -- With Halloween just weeks away, it's the time of year for scary costumes, black cats, witches' brews and haunted houses. While scary may be very much in season, it's best kept out of your everyday decorating ideas.

"As designers, we're sometimes asked to describe the scariest room we ever set foot in," says Brenda Dillon, VP of Merchandising. "So for Halloween, compiled some rather ghoulish decorating practices -- at least in our minds -- along with simple ways to make them less hair-raising!"

So what frightening design mistakes are all too common? Here are the top seven:

. There's little that's more mysterious than hung in the middle of the wall, or near the ceiling. Unless your pictures are very large, connect them with furniture by hanging them not more than 3-8" above a sofa, table, chest or bed.
. A small picture is a beautiful thing, but on its own, it vanishes! Group it with other small pictures or hang it in a small space -- above a chest, leaned against the back of a bookcase, or stacked with one or two other small pictures on a tall, narrow wall.
. Angles add a dynamic quality to a room, but take care not to carve yours up with too many of them. If you like an angled-furniture look, keep pieces at the same angle, so they connect at a 90-degree angle. If you angle just one piece, make it the biggest one -- a bed or sofa.
. Nothing makes a living room look more dismembered than furniture lined up along the walls. Instead, pull furniture into a conversation group, so pieces face each other and everyone is seated within a circumference of 10-12 feet. Try to create a square or rectangle, rather than an odd-shaped grouping. If your room is long, mask the problem by creating the conversation group at one end, and a secondary "room" in the leftover space -- a quiet sitting area with two chairs, a desk or a game table.
. Neighboring objects with shapes that are out of sync will never rest in peace. Banish this problem by looking for compatible ratios, or proportions, in your rooms. Use a rectangular with a and (they create a rectangular shape), hang a tall picture on a narrow wall, place a long centerpiece on a long table... and so on.

. Like a grave without a headstone, a room without a focal point is dull and disappointing. A focal point is a room's main idea -- or the reason the room exists. In the bedroom, it's the bed. In the dining room, it's the table. In the living room, it's the fireplace, sofa or picture window. Whatever your focal point is, orient the rest of your furniture around it and make it larger-than-life with wall art, accents or an area rug to complement it.
. Furniture sitting alone in the middle of a room (or wall) looks isolated and alien. Anchor it by clustering other items around -- an area rug below, a low-hung light pendant or artwork above, and accessories and plants nearby.
