From Northern Italy to the Philippines, Marc Nonnenkamp's "The Borromeo Family of Cebu" Tells the Fascinating International Story of a Famous Roman Catholic Surname

(firmenpresse) - SANTA FE, NM -- (Marketwire) -- 10/10/12 -- Historian and genealogist Marc E. Nonnenkamp presents a comprehensive history of the Borromeo family of the Philippines, exploring primary branches that settled in Cavite on Luzon in the mid 18th century (via Canton in China), in Iloilo on Panay, in Bacolod on Negros and finally in Cebu City, where the author's maternal roots originate. The surname Borromeo comes from Milan in Northern Italy, where its roots go back to the Vitaliani surname of Padua and Naples in the 15th century. The Vitaliani family in turn traces its roots to the Vitellius surname of Pompei, Italy in 292 B.C. Executive Chef Osvaldo Vitaliani of Bolzano-Bozen in the South Tyrol endorses "The Borromeo Family of Cebu" () and assisted author Marc E. Nonnenkamp with Italian genealogical history. The book features a detailed family tree for branches of the Borromeo family from both the Philippines and Italy.

"The Borromeo Family of Cebu" is a fascinating look at world history as it relates to the Philippines (a Spanish Crown Colony from 1521-1898 and an American possession from 1898-1946), Asia, Europe and America. Philippine history, the Philippine economy past and present and modern Philippine business groups are discussed at length. Philippine constitutional history is explored as well, especially as it relates to the author's maternal grandfather -- the late Andrés Borromeo of Cebu City, who served as Judge of the Court of First Instance for the Provinces of Surigao and Agusan on the island of Mindanao. His landmark Philippine Supreme Court case "Borromeo vs. Mariano" established the inviolability of a separate and independent judicial branch of government -- one of the pillars of modern democracy along with separate legislative and executive branches of government.

Also featured are the contents of a Roman Catholic prayer book published by the wife of Judge Andrés Borromeo -- Anunciacion Rallos de Borromeo. The prayers are in the Cebuano language and were fully endorsed by then Bishop Juan Gorordo of Cebu, Cardinal Cardenas (of Barcelona, Spain) and by the Archbishop of Manila in the Philippines.
