Dr. Brendan Quine to discuss ground-breaking Canadian VLBI research

(firmenpresse) - TORONTO, ONTARIO -- (Marketwire) -- 10/18/12 -- Editors note: There is a photo associated with this press release.

Dr. Brendan Quine, CTO of Thoth Technology and Director of Space Engineering at York University, is a featured guest today on Discovery Channel's popular show "Daily Planet." Quine, along with Canadian Institute for Theoretical Astrophysics (CITA) Professor Ue-Li Pen, will be discussing the successful demonstration of modern Very Long Baseline Interferometry (VLBI) capability at the Algonquin Radio Observatory (ARO).

VLBI combines data from observations of distant cosmic objects, such as pulsars, by radio telescopes around the world, simulating a telescope equal in size to the distance between the telescopes. This research uses ARO, India's Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope, and the telescope in Effelsberg, Germany.

"We're delighted to work with the University of Toronto and our German and Indian colleagues. It's particularly exciting to be conducting this research from ARO as it was the first telescope in the world to demonstrate VLBI."

The Daily Planet episode airs today on Discovery Channel at 7:00 pm EDT and will be available online at .
