Sixty-five community organizations will come together on Sunday at the Shaw Conference Centre for the ninth , the bi-annual community event that provides free essential services to homeless and at-risk individuals. The largest event of its kind in Canada, Homeless Connect serves over 1,700 guests in one day, thanks to the involvement of more than 400 community volunteers, as well as generous sponsors and service providers.
Edmonton coordinates Homeless Connect through partnerships with , , the as well as more than 24 community leaders representing various sector organizations and agencies.
"With the 10-year plan to end homelessness, community events such as Homeless Connect are vital because they reach at-risk individuals," said Susan McGee, CEO of Homeward Trust Edmonton. "By providing these essential services in one place, on one day, it becomes much easier for people to access them."
Service providers offer a variety of services to guests, such as haircuts, dentistry, eye-care, immunizations, counseling, laundry and warm meals. Additionally, United Way's Care Kit program ensures every guest receives a care package of essential personal items including toothpaste, shampoo, soap, deodorant and hygiene products. Several service providers have been a part of the event since its inception in October 2008, and more new partners support the event every year.
"As a community partner, the Shaw Conference Centre is proud to support the event and collaborate with other organizations to find solutions to homelessness" said Cliff Higuchi, interim vice president of Tourism and general manager of the Shaw Conference Centre.
Also a partner since the first event, the Shaw Conference Centre has hosted two Homeless Connect events each year, and contributes over $83,000 annually in facility services, including in-house event services contributions of over $20,000.
More than 2,800 volunteers and 420 service providers have delivered services to more than 10,900 homeless and those at-risk-of-becoming-homeless through Homeless Connect Edmonton since 2008.

Homeless Connect Edmonton is organized by volunteer committees that provide direction and support for the event. Homeward Trust Edmonton, a not-for-profit organization providing leadership and resources towards ending homelessness, coordinates the overall work plan and ensures the event aligns with related Edmonton initiatives.
