Each fall, the Canadian International Council (CIC) honours a distinguished international figure with the CIC Globalist of the Year Award. This award is presented to an individual who has shown leadership and innovation on the international stage throughout his or her career. This year, the CIC is recognizing Christine Lagarde, Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund.
After a distinguished career as a lawyer, which saw her elected Chairman of Baker & McKenzie and President of its global strategic committee, Christine Lagarde joined the French government in June 2005 as Minister for Foreign Trade. In June 2007 Christine Lagarde was appointed French Minister of Finance and Economy, the first woman of a G7 country to hold this position. From July to December 2008, she chaired the ECOFIN Council, which brings together Economics and Finance Ministers of the European Union. In 2011, she chaired the G20 Ministers of Finance meetings, until her election as Managing Director of the IMF. Christine Lagarde assumed the office of Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund on July 5th 2011.
