Grants Support Community Gardens and Sustainable Farming Programs Nationwide

(firmenpresse) - LOS ANGELES, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 10/25/12 -- Seeds of Change, maker of nutritious organic foods, is proud to announce the launch of its "Share the Good" grant program, offering organizations that promote nutrition, gardening and farming programs a chance to receive one of 12 grants for $10,000 to fund their efforts to enhance the environmental, economic, and social well-being of gardens, farms, farmers and communities.

The Share the Good grant program is funded by the Seeds of Change "1% Fund," the company's commitment to donate one percent of its global net sales to community-based nutrition, gardening and farming programs. Community-based schools, nutrition-focused programs, gardens and farm-related organizations are encouraged to apply for a grant to support and expand their sustainable growing initiatives.

"Without local gardens and farms, people begin to lose sight of how foods they love make the journey from being a seed to becoming an ingredient on their plate," said Tim Snyder, for Seeds of Change. "At Seeds of Change, we want to change that. We are growers and are passionate about connecting people to their food sources while promoting sustainable food practices. We created the Share the Good grant program to encourage people to get their hands dirty and discover the joys of growing food."

To kick off the grant program this October, Seeds of Change is hitting the road with its "Share the Good" Mobile Garden that will visit schools and communities to share the seed to plate story.

From now until November 30, 2012, eligible organizations can apply online or by mailing an application for a Share the Good grant. Grants will be awarded to local schools, food- and nutrition-based education programs, and garden- or farm-related organizations that encourage their community's appreciation for food from seed to plate.

Each applicant must provide a proposal on how its organization or project shares the good in its community through sustainable gardening and farming, and detail how the project or activity makes its community more sustainable. Specific applications details are available on our website, located at .

Garden lovers can help their community by nominating a local organization online at . Through nominations, supporters can spread the message of what their favorite organization is doing to share the good and each unique nomination will be considered in the judging process. However, all eligible organizations must also submit an application to be considered so all nominators must notify organizations of their nomination.

The recipients of the grants will be selected by a panel of five judges that includes Seeds of Change farmers, who will evaluate each proposal's impact and relevance to the Share the Good initiative. Winners will be announced on or around December 15, 2012. More details on the nomination and judging process are available on the program website. Please visit for more information.

Seeds of Change was founded in 1989 by passionate gardeners with a vision to make organically grown seeds available to gardeners and farmers, while preserving countless heirloom seed varieties in danger of being lost to the "advances" of modern industrial agriculture. For over 20 years, we have remained true to our original vision by offering the largest selection of organic seeds in the industry, including heirloom, traditional, and rare seeds. Our seeds are produced through a network of certified organic family farms and professional growers. Through these partnerships, we continually cultivate, study and develop seeds with the goal of producing the finest certified organic, open-pollinated varieties to share with our fellow gardeners and farmers.
