ZeroAccess Botnet Infected Over 2 Million Home Networks Globally; Generating Almost $1 Million in Ad-Click Fraud Every Day

The Kindsight Security Labs Malware Report for Q3 2012 features malware statistics and trends from July through September 2012, including the top 20 home network infections and Internet threats. Highlights include:
13 percent of home networks in North America were infected in Q3 with 6.5 percent of home networks having high-level threats, such as bots, rootkits, and banking Trojans.
2.2 million home networks worldwide were infected with the ZeroAccess botnet. In North America, approximately 1 in 125 home networks were infected.
Cybercriminals could be costing advertisers $900,000 per day in ad-click fraud with ZeroAccess.
Mobile malware continues to grow with mobile adware accounting for 90% of the 3+% infection rate among mobile devices.
"The ZeroAccess botnet has grown significantly to become the most active botnet we've measured this year," said Kevin McNamee, security architect and director, Kindsight Security Labs. "Cybercriminals are primarily using it to take over victim computers and conduct ad-click fraud. With ZeroAccess, they can mimic the human behavior of clicking online ads, resulting in millions of dollars of fraud."
The report provides analysis on new malware developments over the past three months, including ZeroAccess, TDL4 (TDSS and Alureon), and aggressive mobile advertising. For example, the report includes a 24-hour snapshot of what ZeroAccess criminal activity looks like.
