CanNor Invests in Nunavut's Tourism Sector
Tourism initiatives in Arviat build capacity and create local jobs
(firmenpresse) - ARVIAT, NUNAVUT -- (Marketwire) -- 11/15/12 -- The Honourable Leona Aglukkaq, Minister of Health, Minister of the Canadian Northern Economic Development Agency (CanNor), and Minister for the Arctic Council announced today an investment that will strengthen tourism and business capacity in the Hamlet of Arviat, Nunavut.
"Our Government is proud to work with Nunavummiut on projects that build community capacity and create local jobs," said Minister Aglukkaq. "The tourism sector generates important economic activity in northern communities and this investment will help the Hamlet of Arviat strengthen and diversify its tourism opportunities."
"The Hamlet of Arviat is happy to be working with CanNor to develop the tourism industry in Arviat," said Keith Collier, Community Economic Development Officer for Arviat. "Arviat is proud of its strong traditional culture and beautiful landscape, and tourism allows the community to develop economically while using and preserving those resources."
With CanNor's investment of $105,100, the Hamlet of Arviat will carry out a number of activities under its Arviat Community Ecotourism (ACE) initiative. Activities include training local students so they are equipped to host and guide tourists in the region, marketing and tourism promotion aimed nationally and abroad, and the purchase of a wildlife viewing cabin which will allow for daytrips away from the community for tourists to view wildlife.
Investment in this project is made possible through CanNor's Community Economic Opportunities Program (CEOP), part of the Aboriginal Economic Development (AED) suite of programs. The CEOP provides project-based support to First Nation and Inuit communities for community economic development.
