MANALAPAN, NJ, USA | May 5, 2010 - American Medical Technologies announced
today that implementation of proprietary Blood Cell Morphometric Method
(BCMM) technology has included 2 phases in parallel:
1. Phase 1 included, prototype software development based on existing Ludl
XY stages and focus motor, Ludl XYZ control box with rs-232 communication
with main computer, Nikon Eclipse 50i motorized microscope and QICAM
digital camera with resolution 1392 X 1040 pix. Original system software
for image processing was Media Cybernetics Image-Pro with IP language.
There were 12 versions of software and 13th version of a System has been
doing the following:
a) Automatically scans a blood smear (in snake or snake with return mode
accordingly method recommendations and specs) and found cells and their
coordinates with predictable or autofocus on each cell, then
b) Measures each cell nuclei and membrane parameters to create necessary
statistics to diagnose cancer;
c) Extracts small mosaic images of found cells;
d) Places collected data and images into proper directories to repeat
measurements;
e) Provides macros to measure cells in manual mode;
f) Implements overlaid graphics to visualize the inspection results
(outline);
g) Implements operator images sorting and automated data sorting related to
accepted images;
h) Selects range of color and morphological cells parameters to accommodate
variations in color and blood smears quality.In order to enhance some
limitations of Image-Pro Software and control box, American Medical
Technologies, has started Phase 2 - a process of prototype transformation
into production unit:
We established contacts with American branch of Objective Imaging, Ltd
(Cambridge, United Kingdom): in parallel with developing prototype system,
we have started working together to create production unit.
Major steps of transformation into production unit are the following:
a) Implementation of the next generation Objective Imaging Universal PCI
board for control of motorized stages, focus, and a fourth axis, which has
two major parts: motion control and Image control software. According to
Objective Imaging, the OASIS-blue controller sets the new standard is
high-performance automation control. The ultra-compact design and
Universal PCI bus interface ensure maximum compatibility while delivering
the highest performance. In addition, we has been implemented Objective
Imaging Surveyor-stand-alone software for acquiring and visualizing
large-scale mosaic images, hardware solutions for frame-rate mosaic image
acquisition and OPAL Image Processing Management Library. Objective
Imaging permits to collect 12000 images (area over 150 sq.mm of the blood
smear) in 25 min. This is data based on max performance of our Biopoint 2
XY stage with optimized acceleration on the new board. As a result we can
get the blood smear electronic image (tile image), which can be re-measured
and verified any number of times.
b) Testing of algorithms on collected images and measurements verification.
We implemented prototype algorithms in IpBasic language.
c) The next step is the transition to compiled version of Image-Pro to
accelerate calculations and acquisition. We work with Objective Imaging
Inc. on integration of our algorithms into OPAL library. Library has all
set of functions which will substitute the ones in Media Cybernetics
Image-Pro. Objective Imaging gives us the possibility to work with only
one company software with single licensing.
d) Hardware implementation for production system.
e) Started enhancing autofocus algorithms for precise measurements.
f) We are planning to use Nikon 55i microscope with LED light and LU Nikon
objectives as more stable and reliable for our measurements.
