AEF Schools: Special Needs Students Have Myriad Exceptionalities
AEF Schools Explain That Gifted Students Often Defy Stereotypes
(firmenpresse) - PLANTATION, FL -- (Marketwire) -- 12/03/12 -- Special education is a form of instruction that caters to the needs of students who have a wide range of exceptionalities. From those who learn at a slower pace to those who are considered intellectually gifted, these students benefit from personal attention. Individualized education plans, or IEPs, are created to ensure that special needs students have targeted academic goals and course schedules. believe that it is important to highlight the fact that special needs education is not a one-size-fits-all issue. In fact, students who receive IEPs often demonstrate multiple exceptionalities that must be addressed.
Gifted students, in particular, face stereotypes regarding their educational needs. Sharon Hosch, senior supervisor of special education in St. Tammany, Louisiana, notes in an on TheStTammanyNews.com that a gifted student is often characterized as "one who just sits there with their hands folded quietly, waiting for the next assignment." She reports that this is not true. In fact, the article states that, "They [gifted students] are just as challenging to teachers as other students, many even more so. Teachers must provide academically gifted students by [sic] with challenging and interesting projects they can work on and other advanced materials to keep them from being bored."
In addition to requiring extra intellectual stimulation, gifted students may also need assistance in developing social and life skills. A representative from AEF schools asserts: "Gifted students are included under the special education umbrella. These students are given an IEP from their home school. This plan outlines both the accelerated classes and/or the enrichment classes best suited for the student. Two components often overlooked with gifted students are their social and life skills. Most schools assume that gifted students are highly functioning both socially and emotionally. In the case of students with Asperger's Syndrome, ADHD, or autism, this does not hold true. It is important for schools to address academic, social, and life skills within their gifted classes."
According to the article, the behaviors that are associated with academically gifted students cover a wide range. Among them are: trying new things, thinking independently, expressing unique opinions, using higher level thinking skills, debating current issues, criticizing self and others, forgetting homework assignments, resisting school work not related to an area of interest, becoming overwhelmed, getting bored easily, and challenging authority. know that gifted students, like other special needs individuals, should not be stereotyped by the label that the educational system has provided them. As such, these schools encourage educators to take a more individualized approach when creating IEPs.
