Telenor Norway introduces 4G for mobile
(Thomson Reuters ONE) -
(Fornebu, 6 December 2012) Telenor is the first telecoms operator in Norway to
make it possible to use mobile phones on the 4G network.
Telenor's 4G network is no longer just for surfing on PCs and tablets. From
today you can also use your 4G mobile phone on the 4G network. There are already
several mobile phones on the market which allow you to surf Telenor's 4G network
lightning fast - and more are becoming available all the time.
"4G is data. But from today we are opening up for both speech and web surfing
for everyone with 4G mobile phones on Telenor's network. This has been made
possible by introducing an automatic solution which gives our customers speech
on the 3G network while you surf the internet on the 4G network with your mobile
phone. When your conversation is over you automatically return to the 4G network
and can continue surfing without your data session stopping. We are the first in
Norway to offer this solution," says Berit Svendsen, managing director of
Telenor Norway.
This year's best Christmas present
Telenor's 4G adventure (fourth-generation mobile network) in Norway began two
months ago, when 11 cities and towns received 4G coverage. Since the opening,
expansion has continued at a rapid pace and even more Norwegians will have 4G
from Telenor by Christmas. The Telenor 4G network in Drammen, Fredrikstad,
Sarpsborg, Skien, Porsgrunn and Kristiansand will open then. In the New Year
Telenor will also introduce 4G in Tromsø - and the expansion race continues at
an ambitious tempo.
"Since the launch of 4G in October our customers have been asking to surf at
lightning speed with 4G on their mobiles as well. We have been working hard to
find a solution to this, and it therefore pleases us greatly that we are now
able to offer surfing and chat on the 4G network. This year's best Christmas
present - if you ask me," Svendsen says.
Offensive mobile expansion
Telenor is conducting a fairly intense expansion and updating of the mobile
network in Norway - an operation which is planned for completion by the end of
2015. In addition to expanding 4G throughout Norway Telenor is also conducting a
high-intensity expansion of the 3G network.
"Ninety per cent of Telenor's mobile customers have 3G coverage where they live,
and the continuing expansion will ensure as much as 95 per cent coverage. By the
end of 2015 nine out of 10 Norwegians will also be able to use 4G from Telenor,"
says Berit Svendsen.
