International Kite Festival Draws Crowds to Fuerteventura
(firmenpresse) - LONDON, UNITED KINGDOM -- (Marketwire) -- 12/07/12 -- The Canary Island of Fuerteventura celebrated another successful this November, with good weather attracting large crowds, who came to watch over 250 kites on display at this annual parade.
The three-day international festival takes place in mid-November, and attracts a wide array of European 'kiters' who come to show off their impressive skills and imaginative kite designs. Expect to see Casper the Friendly Ghost riding the wind alongside full sailed-ships, penguins, tigers and much more.
The festival started in 1987 and has become an established tradition on the island. Many people attending the event have been coming ever since the festival was first founded, and have even earned themselves the nickname 'The Fuerteventura Kite Family'.
The first day of the festival is held on a Friday, and is a 'free fly' day when anyone can launch their kites. Saturday sees a presentation by the skilled 'stars of the kite' performers. Afterwards, visitors look out for the night display on the Playa de Corralejo. On Sunday, 150 kites are given to children to use, while two stunt kites battle it out in the sky until one falls to the ground, defeated.
The event is held on the Playa del Burro, located in Corralejo on the northern coast of the island. Whilst the festival showcases serious talent and imagination, it is also a friendly and inclusive event that welcomes anyone with any level of skill or interest in kiting. In 2002, a recently formed kite club for the deaf and dumb joined the festivities, integrating perfectly with the event.
Throughout the rest of the year, Fuerteventura is known as a great surfing destination and also offers fantastic opportunities for fishing, snorkelling and diving, making it a great all-round destination for fun-filled holidays.
