The International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy 2009 will bring together a diverse group
of participants from across the world for a weeklong program of lectures, panel discussions
and social events that will look at the role of soft power in contemporary international relations.

“The Role of Soft Power in the International Environment”

Berlin, 27th – 31st July 2009


The Institute for Cultural Diplomacy’s International Symposium on Cultural Diplomacy will
bring together an international, inter-disciplinary group of 200 participants from across the
world for a weeklong program of lectures and panel discussions. The focus of the
Symposium is the role of soft power in the international environment.

Given the profile of the speakers we would like to extend an invitation for press coverage
of the different components of the event. If you would like to film or record parts of the
Symposium, or conduct interviews with the speakers please send any enquiries you have

The speakers during the event will be experts from the fields of politics, academia and the
private sector and include:

President of Portugal
•Joaquim Chissano, Former President of Mozambique, Former Chairperson of the
African Union
•Dr. Vaira Vīķe-Freiberga, Former President of Latvia
•Cassam Uteem, Former President of the Republic of Mauritius
•Dr. Vasile Puşcaş, Romanian Minister for European Affairs
•Borys Tarasyuk, Former Foreign Minister of the Ukraine
•Dr. Erkki Tuomiojia, Former Foreign Minister of Finland
•Ints Dālderis, Minister of Culture for the Republic of Latvia
•Professor Dr. Joseph S. Nye, University Distinguished Service Professor and Sultan of
Oman Professor of International Relations, Harvard University
•Dr. Gunter Pleuger, Former German Ambassador to the United Nations
•Prof. Dr. Cynthia Schneider, Former US Ambassador to the Netherlands
