Carving a New Path for Strategic Leadership
Research Uncovers Essential Skills for Strategic Leaders; Harvard Business Review Publishes Framework and Self-Assessment

(firmenpresse) - CONSHOHOCKEN, PA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/09/13 -- In times of uncertainty, the ability to think strategically has been cited as the indispensable skill for navigating change and sustaining growth. Yet for those charged with identifying and developing strategic leaders, there is no clear path. In the void, organizations have relied on generalized programs that lack focus, precision and meaningful metrics. But new research conducted by DSI, a future-centered consulting firm, has formalized a framework and assessment tool that provides a practical, actionable method for measuring and mastering strategic thinking skills.
The work, featured in the January issue of Harvard Business Review magazine, is based on more than two decades of field study and a survey sample of more than 20,000 professionals. It pinpoints the six specific and measurable skills that when used in concert, enable leaders to more effectively adapt and manage in a world of constant uncertainty:
1. Proactively monitor the environment for changes both inside and outside your industry
2. Question organizational and industry-wide assumptions that others take for granted
3. Connect multiple data points in new and insightful ways
4. Balance long- and short-term value and seek multiple options for decisions
5. Engage stakeholders to manage differences and create buy-in for initiatives
6. Reflect continuously on past successes and failures to improve your performance and decision-making capabilities
The Strategic Aptitude Assessment™ is an online tool that enables leaders to gauge their strengths and weaknesses for each of the skills. The 12-question self-assessment output provides leaders with an individual score for overall strategic aptitude, along with a specific score for each of the six elements. That data is then compared to the aggregate data, collected from more than 6,000 organizations in 176 countries.
"There is an urgency for strategic thinking among top leaders," said Steve Krupp, CEO of DSI. "As the stakes get higher, these leadership skills will only become more important to the growth and survival of organizations, across complex environments."
Harvard Business Review magazine is distributed across the county, and reaches more than 250,000 print subscribers. To read the article, visit or to rate your strategic aptitude visit:
