Tunnel sealings in Algiers

Tunnel sealings in Algiers

ID: 2181

The infrastructure project was started in June 1981 already. At that time, the then government presented a concept that provided for the construction of three underground lines. The project was stopped temporarily in 1986 due to economic problems.
The two companies Geni Sider and Cosider were commissioned with continuing the building project in 1993.
In 2006, future metro operator EMA assigned a consortium under the guidance of French company Siemens-Transportsparte with the continuation of the construction.

(firmenpresse) - The first section is designed spanning nine kilometers with ten stations. The project still under construction already requires reconstruction.
Still, 110 million passengers a year are expected to shortly be able to use the underground.

The nearby ocean in the Bay of Algiers is one of the difficult parameters of this construction project. The insitu salt water pressure is 6 to 8 m and delays the construction sequence. The concrete tunnel tubes and the connecting joints were made poorly allowing seawater to enter the structure and the interior thus rendering the interior finish impossible.

After two failed reconstruction measures, Drytech was commissioned by the Algerian ministry of transportation with waterproofing two partial sections of 4 km each.

Previous sealing attempts had slowed down construction enormously, so the ministry commissioned the American consulting firm Louis Berger with the search for sealing specialists. Louis Berger Group assigned Matrics Consult Ltd with the analysis of the problem and the development of reconstruction proposals to prevent water ingress quickly and per-manently.

Subsequent sealing of the structure
The Drytech sealing specialists have been at work since December 10, 2008, in order to expedite the building measure. The 4 km western section was to have been made of 10 m waterproof concrete tubes. Fissures, gravel pockets and joints in this area are to be reliably and permanently sealed against the salt water pressing in from the sea. The fissures discovered to date alone add up to 13,000 linear meters.
The hollows and fissures will be waterproofed or closed with injection resin that is pressed in. DRY-flex injection resin is introduced with spiralshaped injection anchors with a lowpressure process. The viscosity of the resin can be adjusted flexibly so that larger hollows and smallest fissures are filled relia-bly. The injected structure is waterproof, stiffened and compacted after the resin has hardened.

Drytech Dila sleeves are additionally inserted into leaky expansion joints. They are special support elements with a foam inlay to support the effect of the DRYflex injection resin in larger joints.
The time for reconstruction is estimated at 7 months and the order volume currently mounts up to 13 mil-lion Swiss francs.
Based on its decades of experience in the field of preventive and reconstructive waterproofing, Dry-tech also grants a 10-year watertightness warranty for these sealing measures.

Previous sealing attempts
A French company first tried its hand with acrylic resin. But water again penetrated 15% of the applications. The second company was a German one that used polyurethane against the salt water in-gress. But this measure too did not prove to be successful. The enormous temperature fluctuation caused the polyurethane to burst open.
The volatile and easily inflammable gases of poly-urethane caused a disastrous fire in a South African mine in 1986, painfully killing more than 177 people. For this reason, too, polyurethane is prohibited in some countries, among them the UK, and should also not have been used for the underground in Algiers.

Outlook of underground expansion
The line is soon to mostly follow the coastline for 3.5 kilometers between the city districts Emir Abdelkader and Oued Koreiche. Six stations are planned for this section of the line.
The original plan of the Algerian government that provides for two additional underground lines in the Algerian capital is then to be continued.
The second line will cross line 1 at the stations Hai el Badr and Tafourah starting at the Grande Poste station in the city center, and connect the Bab Ezzouar Annassers plateau via Badjarah and El-Harrach.
The third line is projected between Hussein Dey and Ain Allah via Annassers.
