Statement of an Official Source in Saudi Arabia

(firmenpresse) - RIYADH, KINGDOM OF SAUDI ARABIA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/17/13 -- An Official Source in Saudi Arabia issued a statement concerning the execution of a Sri Lankan domestic worker for the death of an infant in her care. It reads as follows:

The Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia deplores the statements made by; UN Secretary General, Vice-President of the European Commission, European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security, the Spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and a number of agencies and foreign bodies on the execution of a Sri Lankan domestic worker for plotting and killing an infant by suffocating him to death one week after she arrived in the Kingdom. The Government of Saudi Arabia also deplores the false information contained in those statements about the case without full knowledge of the circumstances accompanying it.

Therefore the Government of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia would like to clarify the following:

First: Inaccuracy of allegations that the offender was a minor. These allegations are clearly and unequivocally refuted by the age indicated on her passport (21 years of age) when she committed the crime. As it is well known universally the passport is considered an official document issued by the Government of her country. The Kingdom's legal regulations don't allow the recruitment of minor workers.

Second: After confirming the crime from all legal aspects the case was referred to the justice and she had a trial and full access to legal defence with the Sri Lankan government following up the case as well as briefing her country's officials who visited the Kingdom including the Attorney General of Sri Lanka about all circumstances and procedures that accompanied the case since its inception.

Third: After the verdict, Saudi Arabia made strenuous efforts at the highest levels to persuade the infant's parents to agree to clemency or accept payment of blood money in exchange for sparing her life. Those efforts were highly appreciated by the Government of Sri Lanka, however they were unsuccessful because the infant's parents insisted on enforcing the execution and did not waive their rights.

The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia thereby clarifies this to emphasize at the same time its respect for the sovereignty of the judiciary and all laws and regulations and protecting the rights of citizens and residents on its territory and completely rejects any interference in its affairs, and judicial verdicts regardless of justifications.
