The American Diabetes Association Kicks Off Its Annual Tour de Cure Cycling Event

(firmenpresse) - ALEXANDRIA, VA -- (Marketwire) -- 01/24/13 -- The is challenging riders to be part of the movement to Stop Diabetes® by participating in their annual ®, a cycling event to raise funds to help fight diabetes. More than 65,000 cyclists are expected to participate in the Tour de Cure at sites throughout the country in 2013. All funds raised at the Tour de Cure events will go to support the Association's mission -- to prevent and cure diabetes and to improve the lives of all people affected by diabetes.

Individuals and teams composed of co-workers, family and friends are taking the ride of their life and helping raise funds to change the future of diabetes for the nearly 26 million Americans with the disease. Tour de Cure is designed for everyone from the occasional bike rider to the experienced cyclist with routes ranging from 5-mile family rides to 100-mile "century" rides and more. Routes vary by location -- visit for more information about the Tour near you. All Tour de Cure events feature rest stops with great food to fuel the journey, volunteers to cheer riders on, and any mechanical support needed along the way. Everyone will return to enjoy the finish line festivities including a delicious lunch, entertainment and more!

"The Tour de Cure is a beautiful celebration of health for all of us who want to change the future of diabetes," said Mari Ruddy, who has lived with type 1 diabetes for 31 years and is the founder of the Red Rider program. "The Tour is a ride for any individual or team who wants to enjoy a great day of cycling and, at the same time, stop diabetes. I know how important it is to stay strong and healthy, and cycling is one positive way to do that. Join in and spend a day riding with your friends, family or co-workers!"

Today, there are nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States who have diabetes. While an estimated 18.8 million have been diagnosed, unfortunately, 7 million people are unaware that they have the disease. Recent estimates project that as many as 1 in 3 American adults will have diabetes in 2050 unless we take steps to Stop Diabetes.

"It's important for us to be part of improving lives of people with diabetes -- either by encouraging people to exercise more or by supporting diabetes research -- or in this case, both," said Leonard Glass, MD, Senior Medical Director, Lilly Diabetes. "Tour de Cure also gives our employees across the United States an opportunity to connect with people in their community who are touched by diabetes."

If you have diabetes and plan to ride in Tour de Cure, we invite you to join the , a program created by the American Diabetes Association to recognize participants who have diabetes. You are why we ride! Red Riders are given a jersey to proudly wear at the event, from our cycling apparel sponsor, Primal Wear.

"Our relationship with the Tour de Cure stretches back to 2005 and it remains one of our most important and valued connections," said Primal Founder Dave Edwards. "Not only are these world-class cycling events that encourage thousands of people each year to discover the joy of cycling, but the research and work the American Diabetes Association does is instrumental in improving the lives of millions of people who live with this disease every day."
