Achievement Gains With Conceptua(R) Fractions for At-Risk District, Sunnyside USD
(firmenpresse) - PETALUMA, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/07/13 -- Conceptua Math today announced that Tucson, Arizona's Sunnyside Unified School District (USD) made dramatic gains in student achievement using the Conceptua Fractions curriculum during the fall of 2012.
Pre- and post-test data has been analyzed for 2,000 fourth and fifth graders, across 13 schools and 120 classrooms, who used the program daily as a replacement fractions curriculum for two and a half months. The impact on student performance was dramatic. Student understanding of fractions nearly doubled, with an overall increase in comprehension of 36% in both grades. Before studying fractions, only 4.5% of the students were proficient with the subject matter. After using Conceptua Fractions, the proficiency rate increased to 61%.
"The post test results were extremely encouraging. The data show significant growth in a core curricular area where it has historically been very difficult for us to raise student performance," says Christie McDougall, Math Coordinator, Sunnyside Unified School District.
The serves more than 18,000 preK-12 students with a population that is 88% Hispanic and 85% low socioeconomic. The graduation rate is 67%. Four of the five middle schools and two of the elementary schools are currently labeled as "D" schools according to AZ Learns, Arizona's accountability system. Low performance in mathematics is a significant factor contributing to this accountability rating. As a result, Sunnyside was looking for a new math curriculum, starting with the topic that students and teachers found most difficult and frustrating -- fractions.
