Online Learning Portal Now Offers 1,300 Lessons Across 33 College Courses

(firmenpresse) - MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/20/13 -- Education Portal, a Silicon Valley start-up that develops free online courses that lead to real college credit, today announced that their courses have reached over two million students.

Since launching its first free course in October 2011, Education Portal has published over 1,300 individual video lessons across 33 courses, covering all of the subjects typically taught in the first two years of college. Education Portal's team of instructors has grown to include over 150 educators and subject matter experts who work together to create cohesive courses.

Recent company milestones include:

Education Portal expanded its course offerings to include free GED prep

Video micro-lectures are reaching over 400,000 students every month

Four courses are complete: English Literature, Calculus, Psychology and Educational Psychology are now 100% developed, and several others are very near completion.

"Our mission has always been to make education accessible to everyone, everywhere," says Ben Wilson, President, Education Portal. "We are extremely proud of the strides we have made towards that goal in the last year and a half, and we are diligently working to provide students with even more online learning resources in the coming months."

Education Portal's courses allow students to learn for free and earn college credit through inexpensive credit-granting exams such as the CLEP, DSST and Excelsior College exams. The exam fees typically cost less than $100, one-sixth of the $600 average cost of a college course, according to the College Board. The college credit can be transferred to over 2,900 U.S. colleges and universities, allowing motivated students to test out of general education requirements and cut the cost of their degree in half.

Elisa Fleming, a student enrolled at Regent University, saved $2,000 and earned credit that transferred to her university by using Education Portal's free psychology course to pass the Psychology CLEP exam. "I'm a full time student, working and broke. Despite all that, I was able to get everything I needed for the Psych CLEP in less than two weeks because of Education Portal's classes," said Fleming. In addition to earning credit for psychology, students like Elisa have used the free courses to earn college credit for Calculus, Biology, and U.S. History.
